Description: “Nothing But Leaf:” Plant Form through Cultural Lenses
Specimens in the Ferguson Greenhouses are theatrically lit in a special nighttime display. In the 18th century, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe founded the field of morphology: the science of forms and formative forces. His thoughtful observations of plants led him to conclude, “From first to last, the plant is nothing but leaf.” Highlighted plants in the greenhouses elucidate Goethe’s progression of “leaf” into stems, flower parts and fruit, and these details are revealed through scientific observation, art and poetry, just as Goethe aimed to do. Join us for refreshments in the Visitor's Center after exploring the Greenhouses.
